Citywide Cleanup: First Saturdays

Dowagiac’s Citywide Cleanup program continues! Every first Saturday of the month through October, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Dowagiac compost site, residents within the Dowagiac city limits are encouraged to take advantage of free disposal of most household junk:

  • Furniture
  • Toys
  • Building materials
  • Etc

Limit one truck or trailer per address, per day. Items must be manageable in size. Dumpsters will close for the day when full.

IDs are required to access the site. If you’re not the property owner, please bring a copy of your utility bill or lease showing residency within the Dowagiac city limits. You are allowed to help your neighbors bring in their items; just bring their information with you.

Items NOT accepted include:

  • Yard waste (grass, leaves, and limbs go to the compost site, not junk dropoff)
  • Household garbage
  • Liquids of any kind
  • Tires
  • Food of any kind
  • Batteries
  • Dirt, rocks, brick, concrete, or sand
  • Hazardous materials
  • Asbestos (includes old floor tile, insulation, and shingles)
  • Paint cans with wet paint (ONLY latex paint cans that has had kitty litter poured in and are fully dried are acceptable)
  • Freon-containing items, including refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners (items must have Freon Removed tag)
  • Beverage containers (smaller than a gallon and carbonated are required by state law to be recycled)
  • Cylinders — propane, oxygen, helium, or water. Cannot be sealed — must be able to visually inspect the inside of the container.

The entrance to the site, which is co-located with the Dowagiac compost site, is located at the east end of Veterans Memorial Drive in Riverside Cemetery, which can be accessed from the intersection of Riverside Drive and Hill Street.
