The primary function of the clerk's office is keeper of the records. The clerk's position is an elected post and functions as official record keeper for the Planning Commission, council and other boards and commissions of local government. Equally important is the voter registration of elections within the city. The City of Dowagiac has three wards which represents both election and state representative districts within the city.

The City Treasurer is elected and charged with the custody of all public monies of the City and the depositing of the same in institutions approved by the City Council.
The City of Dowagiac sends out two tax bills per year. The summer tax bill is mailed the first week of July and due September 15th. The winter tax bill is mailed out the first week of December and is due February 28th. Payments may be made at the City of Dowagiac's Treasurer's Office for the current tax year. All previous year's tax payments must be made at the County Courthouse in Cassopolis.
