Spring Clean-up

Annual citywide clean up program occurring the end of April. Program allows residents of Dowagiac the opportunity to clean out their homes and yards of refuse to be picked up by a contractor and hauled to one of the local landfills.

Brush and Compostable Yard Waste Disposal Program

Program occurs April through mid-October each year. City crews pick up brush and bagged yard waste curbside.

Fall Loose Leaf Pick-up Program

Annual citywide program occurring from mid-October to the end of November (weather permitting). This is the only time of the year where residents in Dowagiac can rake their loose leaves to the curb for pick-up.

Hydrant Flushing

Program occurs at least once each year for one week. DPS crews turn on fire hydrants to clear the water mains of accumulated iron deposits and to wash the large accumulation of debris on the streets and catch basins through the storm and sanitary sewer systems to the Wastewater Treatment Plant.

NOTE: If the water in your home is discolored by the flushing, it is suggested that you drain your hot water tank to remove any rust particles that may have accumulated and flush your water pipes by letting the water run for 5-10 minutes.

Christmas Tree Disposal Program

Program runs during the month of January (weather permitting). The City will dispose of natural Christmas trees that are placed curbside.

Sidewalk Replacement Program

DPS staff reviews requests from residents, staff, or other departments for sidewalks in need of repair or replacement.
Sidewalk locations are placed on a list and forwarded to the City Administration for review.
Bid specifications are prepared and notices are sent to affected homeowners with an estimated cost for repairs.
Upon completion, costs are determined and invoices are sent to the homeowner for their portion of the cost for the sidewalk repair.

Tree Removal and Replacement Program

Residents who have a tree that is on the tree lawn that is in bad shape and would like to have it trimmed or removed should contact the Department of Public Services at 782-8200.
A service order is written to check the tree.
If it is determined to need trimming or removal, the City will contact a tree contractor to come in and perform the work, free of charge to residents.
For residents who have a tree removed that was on City property, they are eligible for a replacement tree.
The residents name is forwarded to the Grounds Department for review and notification of tree replacement.
