The Dowagiac Fire Department was first established in 1854. Today
it provides professional service to nearly 4.5 square miles of the
City of Dowagiac, and approximately 7.5 square miles of rural area
that surrounds the city.
The departments provide a number of services to the community and
surrounding areas. This includes Basic Fire Suppression Operations,
Vehicle Extrication/Rescue, Limited Hazardous Materials Response,
Ice/Cold Weather Rescue, Professional Fire Cause and Determination
Arson Investigation, Fire Prevention and Safety Education, Building/Facility
Inspection and Code Enforcement, and Juvenile Fire Setters Program.
Departmental standards in training and efforts have paid off for the
citizens of Dowagiac. The City of Dowagiac has maintained an ISO (Insurance
Service Organization) rating of 5 for several years. This has saved
property owners in the city thousands of dollars annually in lowerinsurance
premiums.
The Fire Department is staffed by 5 full time employees and 17 part
paid (On Call) employees. All personnel are highly trained and provide
