Why do I need a building permit?

Building permits insure that all alterations, additions, construction, demolition or renovation work to any structure conforms to a minimal safety standard according to applicable codes.

When do I need a building permit?

Building permits are required for any work which will enlarge or decrease in size any structure, any renovation which affects structural members, exits, or any work which will change the use of a structure.

Permits are not normally required for work involving painting, window or door replacement, provided that the window opening is not enlarged or decreased in size. If you have specific questions on building permit requirements, please contact the Building Official's office at
(269) 782-8427.

How does a person obtain a building permit?

A permit application may be obtained from the Building Department or it can be downloaded at the link below. Typical information that is needed for the application includes: property owner and address, job address, person or firm responsible for the work, description of the work being proposed, sealed construction documents (when required). The complete application and prints and drawings will be reviewed and upon approval, the appropriate permit is then issued.

Who can obtain a building permit?

A building permit can be issued to a property owner, a Michigan licensed contractor, or a registered design professional.

Do I need a permit to install a fence?

Yes, all fences erected in the city require a zoning permit. At the time of permit issuance, all applications are provided with a copy of the fencing regulations.

Do I need a permit to install a shed?

Yes, all sheds, whether permanent or temporary, require a permit. If the shed size is less than 200 square feet, it requires a zoning permit. If the shed size is over 200 square feet, it requires a building permit. For sheds over 200 square feet, please contact the Building Department for foundation requirements.

Where may a resident park or store a motor vehicle?

A currently licensed and fully operational motor vehicle may be parked in any driveway, rear yard or any side yard, which is not abutting a street. The City prohibits all front yard parking (except driveways) and any side yard parking abutting a street. If a motor vehicle is to be stored upon the property in public view, it must be maintained as fully licensed and operational at all times.
